5 different materials for the soles of shoes
Since the 21st century, with the continuous development of shoemaking process, more shoemaking materials began to be developed and applied, polyurethane compared with other common shoemaking materials, each has different advantages, this article we compare the advantages of polyurethane and other materials, hope to help you choose the material of the sole, can be helpful
1、Polyurethane (PU)
Weight: Moderate density of polyurethane, relatively light.
Wear resistance: The wear resistance of polyurethane is very superior and suitable for footwear requiring high durability.
Flexibility: With good elasticity and flexibility, comfortable to wear.
Oil resistance and chemical corrosion resistance: polyurethane oil resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for industrial shoes or work shoes.
Molding capacity: can produce complex shapes of the sole, easy to process a variety of different hardness of the sole.
Environmental protection: Compared with PVC, harmful plasticizers are not used in PU production, and PU products are easier to recycle.
Cost: The cost is slightly higher than rubber and TPU, but lower than some high-performance materials.
2. Rubber
Weight: Rubber is heavier, especially when the thickness of the sole is larger.
Wear resistance: Rubber wear resistance is excellent, especially suitable for outdoor shoes and sports shoes.
Flexibility: Excellent flexibility and grip, suitable for complex terrain.
Skid resistance: The natural skid resistance of rubber makes it excellent on wet surfaces.
Heat resistance: Rubber sole has good heat resistance, suitable for high temperature working environment.
Cost: Higher cost, especially for natural rubber.
3. EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer)
Weight: EVA is a very light material and is commonly used in light sports shoes and slippers.
Cushioning: With excellent cushioning performance, it is very suitable for the mid-sole part of sports shoes.
Softness: EVA is soft and has good elasticity, providing a comfortable wearing experience.
Molding ability: easy to process and shape, can be compressed into various shapes.
Durability: It is not as durable as rubber and polyurethane and is easy to wear, especially when used outdoors.
Environmental protection: Generally speaking, EVA is not very environmentally friendly, and it is difficult to dispose of it.
Cost: Low cost, suitable for the mass consumer market.
4. PVC
Weight: PVC is heavy, especially in the design of thicker soles, which will affect the wearing experience.
Wear resistance: poor wear resistance, easy to wear in long-term wear.
Flexibility: The flexibility is relatively low, especially in the low temperature environment is easy to harden.
Skid resistance: The skid resistance of PVC soles is general, not as good as rubber and other materials.
Molding capacity: Good molding performance, strong plasticity, suitable for mass production.
Environmental protection: Harmful chemicals are used in the production process, the plasticizer content is high, and the environmental protection is poor.
Cost: Low cost, is an economical shoemaking material.
5. TPU
Weight: TPU is lighter and lighter than PVC and rubber.
Wear resistance: TPU has excellent wear resistance and durability, suitable for high-end sports shoes and outdoor shoes.
Flexibility: Excellent elasticity and flexibility, suitable for sports shoes that require high resilience.
Slip resistance: TPU has good slip resistance, especially suitable for running shoes and hiking shoes.
Transparency: TPU can be made into transparent soles, which are often used in fashion shoes.
Environmental protection: TPU is a recyclable material with higher environmental performance than PVC.
Cost: The cost is slightly higher than EVA and PVC, but cheaper than PU.
Sum up:
Polyurethane (PU) is outstanding in wear resistance, flexibility and environmental protection, and is suitable for a variety of footwear.
Rubber is best in terms of wear resistance and grip, suitable for outdoor shoes and sports shoes.
EVA is lightweight and suitable for lightweight footwear, but has poor durability.
PVC has low cost, but poor environmental protection and durability, and is suitable for low-cost footwear.
TPU combines elasticity and durability, and is often used in high-end sports shoes and fashion shoes.
According to different use scenarios, shoe manufacturers can choose the right materials to produce shoes corresponding to their needs.
I hope this article can help you
